Senator Syverson: Governor right to veto budget sent to him by Democrats

State Senator Dave Syverson (R-Rockford) released the following statement following Governor Rauner’s veto of budget bills:

The budget that was finally sent to the Governor (three weeks past the deadline) had no Republican votes and is considered to be the most unbalanced budget ever passed in Illinois. The Democrat budget spends nearly $4 billion more than projected revenue, even though Illinois’ constitution requires the legislature to pass a balanced budget.

The fact that they waited 3 weeks to send the budget to the Governor has also created uncertainty for all those effected by the budget, and created unnecessary delays in the process.

For 6 months we have offered to work on passing pro-job reforms to improve the Illinois economy and to help pass a balanced budget, however both ideas were rejected, with Democratic leaders choosing to pass this irresponsible budget.

Another concern for our region is that the Democrat budget took out funding for many key projects promised and underway in the Rockford area including funding for Rock Valley College, Airport, and Sportscore2,  just to name a few.

The new fiscal year begins July 1st. The leaders need to do what’s right for Illinois, let the politics go until the next election, and work with us to get Illinois turned around.”
