State Senator Dave Syverson (R-Rockford) is co-sponsoring a resolution urging the U.S. Congress to return ComEd’s $200 million fine to their ratepayers in Illinois either through direct payments or by directing the funds to the Illinois Commerce Commission for distribution to ratepayers. 

As residents have come to learn, ComEd is paying a $200 million criminal fine as part of a federal investigation into a years-long bribery scheme in the State involving jobs, contracts, and payments.

“Corruption is not a victimless crime, and this recent scandal involving ComEd is a prime example of how bribes and schemes could have resulted in negative financial consequences for hardworking families in Illinois,” said Sen. Syverson. “The wrongdoing perpetuated by those who were involved in these actions was of their own doing, not their consumers. However, somehow consumers are the ones who are faced with the financial consequences of these actions. It is only appropriate that their restitution payment be given back to their Illinois customers.”

The $200 million fine will be deposited in the federal treasury, and the U.S. Congress has the ability to direct where those funds are sent.

Copies of Senate Resolution 1290 will be delivered to the U.S. Senate Majority Leader, the U.S. Senate Minority Leader, the U.S. Speaker of the House, the U.S. House of Representatives Minority Leader, and all members of the Illinois Congressional Delegation.
