SPRINGFIELD – State Senator Dave Syverson (R-Cherry Valley) issued the following statement criticizing the passage of the controversial “Energy Omnibus”:
“This energy omnibus was an absolute failure. Families throughout Illinois have struggled with skyrocketing energy costs, yet no relief was delivered. Instead, they were handed an $8 billion rate hike.
“In 2021, the legislature passed a bill expanding wind and solar in Illinois. Lawmakers promised at the time it would cost families no more than $3.50 a month. Four years later, electric bills are up 54 percent and still climbing. Seniors and working families are being forced to make tough choices just to keep the lights on.
“This did not have to happen. In 2020, Illinois had the lowest energy rates in the Midwest, helping attract and retain energy-intensive jobs. Today, Illinois has the highest rates in the region, and Democrats are doubling down on the same failed policies that caused it.
“Instead of learning from past mistakes, the new law pours billions into unproven battery technology that can only power homes for a few hours and strips local control, allowing massive energy storage projects within 150 feet of someone’s property. They will continue to expand failed wind and solar projects while forcing Illinois ratepayers to fund another $8 billion through their ComEd bills, with promises that paying more now will somehow mean lower rates after 2030. Does anyone really believe that? Business groups certainly do not, including the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association, Illinois Farm Bureau, Grain & Feed Association, Illinois Association of County Board Members, Fertilizer and Chemical Association, and others.
“Illinois families deserve an energy plan that lowers costs and strengthens reliability, not one that doubles down on failed ideas. This bill does neither.”
