A new state law aimed at reducing classroom distractions will require Illinois public schools to restrict student cellphone use beginning with the 2027-2028 school year.
Under Senate Bill 2427, public school districts and charter schools must adopt policies prohibiting students from using cellphones and other wireless communication devices during the school day.
The law includes exceptions for students who need a device to manage a medical condition, comply with an individualized education program or Section 504 plan, access learning materials as an English learner, or fulfill responsibilities as a caregiver. Schools may also permit devices for educational purposes or during certain emergencies. Districts may also choose to allow high school students to use devices during lunch and passing periods.
Teachers, administrators, and parents must be given an opportunity to provide input as schools develop and implement their policies. Student input is also encouraged.
