SPRINGFIELD– Senator Dave Syverson (R-Rockford) joined fellow lawmakers Tuesday in overriding Governor Pat Quinn’s amendatory veto of legislation bringing the right to carry a concealed weapon to Illinois. 

The Senate voted to override the Governor’s veto by a 41-17 margin. The House made a similar vote earlier Tuesday.

“The General Assembly has done many important things wrong over the years,” said Senator Syverson. “Today, after months of negotiation and hard work, and not withstanding the Governor’s misguided action, Right-to-Carry is now the law of the land in Illinois. We now join 49 other states with concealed carry in place. This law will make Illinois a safer place to live, work, and raise families.” 

Furthermore, Syverson opposed separate last minute changes to the bill that had been the subject of six months of intense negotiations. Syverson says the original bill is not a perfect solution, but says the law takes significant steps in protecting the constitutional rights of gun owners. He urges Governor Quinn and the Illinois State Police to put the program in place as soon as possible.
